After many battles fought and won, the St. Mary's Cardinals were humbled last week when they hosted their own Triangular Tuesday, Oct. 7. Competing first was Archangels Catholic. Both teams had a fiery start, but the Defenders managed to pull ahead. The Cards lost their footing in the second and fell 2-0; 26-24 & 25-13. Gracie Williamson led the charge with nine kills and 10 digs; Delaney Drueke had five kills, three digs and one set assist; Tatum Ickes had four kills and six digs; Samantha Asche had two kills, one ace serve and two digs; Anna Otte had one kill; Adyson Peterson had one ace serve, 12 digs and 19 set assists; and Bethany Leisy had one ace serve and 11 digs. After losing their impressive 14-win streak they held since the beginning of September, the girls were faced with EPPJ. The Cards faced EPPJ twice last season, and twice they came home with their heads hung low. The opening to this recent encounter didn't look too promising either, with the Wolfpack holding the Cards down to just 14 points in the beginning. The Cards upped their play, but still fell short. In the end, EPPJ claimed another one over the Cards, 2-0; 25-14 & 25-20. Williamson again led with six kills, one ace serve and two digs; Ickes had five kills, three digs; Drueke had three kills, one block and four digs; Asche had one kill, one ace serve and two digs; Otte had two kills, one block and one dig; Peterson had one kill, one block, four digs and 18 set assists; and Leisy had two digs. After their crushing hometown defeat, the Cardinals traveled to Niobrara/Verdigre for another Tri Thursday, Oct. 9. Perhaps inspired by their defeat, the Cards bounced back into their usual swing against North Central. They quickly cleared their opponent 2-0 and moved on. Ickes was the MVP with 10 kills and three digs; Williamson closely followed with eight kills, one block and six digs; Peterson had two kills, three ace serves, one block, three digs and 17 set assists; Otte had two kills and one block; Ache had one kill; Drueke had two ace serves, two blocks, four digs and two set assists; and Leisy had two ace serves, five digs and one set assist. Keeping with the pace of the last game, the Cards laid the hurt on Niobrara/Verdigre. The Cards went on the offensive and kept the opponent at bay. They took the win 2-0 for a clean sweep of the day. Williamson was the champ with 11 kills and seven digs; Ickes had six kills and seven digs; Drueke had four kills, one ace serve and seven digs; Peterson had two kills, six digs and 20 set assists; Asche had one kill, one ace serve and two digs; Leisy had one ace serve, 10 digs and two set assists; Otte had two digs and one set assist. A few days of rest went by and the girls were back on the court Saturday, Oct. 11, this time competing in the Anselmo-Merna Tournament. The girls first faced Medicine Valley, far from a common match-up. The Cards managed to keep up the pace from their last couple of games, and served the Raiders 2-0; 25-12 & 25-13. Right when the girls were finally back into their groove, Mullen brought them back down. It was a hard-fought match, but the Broncos came out on top 2-0; 25-16 & 25-21. With just one more opponent to go before the week's end, the Cardinals would give it everything they had. The opener was a close call, but the Cards managed to gain the upper-hand. The girls pushed forward and dropped the host 2-0, bringing an end to their Tournament play and their week. After such a long time on top, it was only a matter of time before the Cardinals were brought down. But the team is certainly still in good standing, with their record on the season at 18-5.
