Merl "Butch" Grossnicklaus


Military graveside services for Merl "Butch" Grossnicklaus, age 62, of Norfolk, formerly of Atkinson, will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday,  April, 27, 2013, in the Chambers Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Atkinson American Legion Farley-Tushla Post #86 and the Chambers American Legion Post #320. Butch passed away early Tuesday morning, March 19, 2013, at the Norfolk Veteran's Home.

Memorials may be made to the Chambers American Legion Post #320 or the Atkinson American Legion Farley-Tushla Post #86.

Services are under the direction of Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.

Merl was born on July 16, 1950, in Orchard, to Merlin and Gladys (Thomson) Grossnicklaus. He graduated from Chambers High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam from March 12, 1971, until March 11, 1974. 

Merl graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Following graduation he moved to Atkinson where he worked as an accountant for Galyen Motors for many years. He also worked as the clubhouse manager at the Atkinson-Stuart Country Club.

He lived in Atkinson until 2006 when his health declined and he moved to the Norfolk Veteran's Home.

Merl was a member of the Atkinson American Legion Farley-Tushla Post #86. He was also involved in the Atkinson Hay Days celebration and the Lions Club.

He loved Nebraska football and traveled all over to watch them play. He also enjoyed playing golf.

Merl is survived by his three sisters: Lynn Smith and husband Dan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Tammy Gerber and husband Dave of Ellsworth and Zoe Tillman of Cheyenne, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Heather Smith.
