The St. Mary's Cardinals have advanced to round two of the Nebraska State football play-offs with their 56-18 win over the Sandhills Valley Mavericks on Thursday, Oct. 22
The Cardinal's first-round draft was the 16th seed and came into the game with a 4-4 record with wins over some marginal teams.
The Cardinals will advance to the second round of the play-offs against Bloomfield on Friday, Oct.30, at 6 p.m. in O'Neill. The Cards squeaked by the Bees early in the month with a 36-30 win.
The Cardinals ran 65 plays for 22 first downs and had one penalty for 10 yards. The Mavericks ran 37 plays and had five first downs and had one penalty for five yards for 378 total yards offense.
The Mavericks had a small squad and quickly ran down against the Card's fast-paced offense. The Cards first drive took them down into the Mavericks territory and with 10:10 on the clock, Aidan Hedstrom ran the ball in from the 23 for the first touchdown of the night. Hedstrom connected with Tate Thompson for the conversion.
The Mavericks couldn't make progress with the Cardinal defense falling short of making the first down mark and punting the ball away. Hedstrom hit Thompson for the Cards second score of the night, and Hedstrom ran in the conversion to put the Cards up 16-0.
The Cardinals scored twice in the second, with Hedstrom hitting Thompson on a 48-yard touchdown and a three-yard touchdown by Hedstrom.
The Mavericks did manage to get on the board before the half when Conner Phillips took a fumble recovery 65 yards for a touchdown. The Cards let at the half 30-6.
The Cards had their biggest run on scoring in the third scoring 20 points. On the kick-off Thompson ran 62 yards for six and Dalton Alder ran in the conversion. Hedstrom ran in an 18-yard touchdown and Hedstrom hit Connor Semin on a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Mavericks scored when Phillips hit Cole Kramer on a 65-yard touchdown.
The Cards relaxed in the fourth letting the second team mop up Wyatt Scofield ran in a 32-yard touchdown and the Mavericks scored six when Jaxton Starr ran in a 10-yard touchdown.
Hedstrom had 13 attempts for five completions and three touchdowns.
Hedstrom led the rushing with 21 carries for 149 yards and three touchdowns; Thompson had 11 carries for 55 yards; Alder 16 carries for 46 yards, and Scofield two carries for 36 yards and one touchdown.
Thompson led receiving with two catches for 50 yards and two touchdowns; Semin one catch for 20 yards and a touchdown; and Issac Everitt with two catches for 21 yards.
Thompson, Adam Everitt, Isaiah Wiese led the Cards in defense with eight tackles each; Charles Barlow had seven tackles; Hedstrom and Semin each had three tackles; Issac Everitt, Kyle Pribil and Scofield two tackles each; and Alder and Lawrence Werth one tackle each.
