St. Mary's Blake Benson sails to the bucket in action against Fremont Bergan last Saturday in O'Neill.

The Cardinals traveled to Riverside on Friday, Dec. 4 to begin their basketball season against the Chargers.

The Cardinals started out tough, marking up 16 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter while the Chargers only managed to put up six points. In the second quarter the Cardinals continued to increase their lead, adding 22 more points while the Chargers only managed an addition of 13 points. At halftime, the Cardinals led 38-19.

The third quarter continued along the same lines with the Cardinals getting a 17 point addition to their side of the scoreboard, while the Chargers only tacked on seven additional points. The fourth quarter was the closest quarter when the Cardinals were outscored nine to 10. At the buzzer the Cardinals held the 64-36 victory.

Leading scorers for the Cards were Aidan Hedstrom putting up 25 of the Cards points, including one from the three-point range, shooting 80 percent from the floor and getting six rebounds; Blake Benson with 23 points, making five three pointers; getting four rebounds and four steals; Connor Semin seven points, five rebounds and one steal; Adam Everitt five points and six rebounds; and Isaac Everitt four points, three rebounds and one steal.

The Cards then hosted the Archbishop Bergan Knights from Fremont on Saturday, Dec. 5. In this game the Cards trailed the Knights after the first quarter, putting up nine points to the Knights’ 14. The roles were reversed in the second quarter when the Cards tacked on 13 points and held the Knights to a four point addition. At halftime, the Cards led 22-18.

The third quarter found the Cards struggling again, only getting eight more points on the board, while the Knights marked up 18 more points. The Cards kept it closer in the fourth when they added 16 points while the Knights added 15 points, but that wasn’t enough to make up the difference in the third. At the buzzer the Cards trailed 46-51.

Leading scorers for St. Mary’s were Hedstrom with 21 points, making three from the three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line, getting two rebounds and four steals; Semin with seven points, making one three-pointer, getting 15 rebounds and two steals; Tate Thompson six points and eight rebounds; Adam Everitt six points, four rebounds and one steal; Isaac Everitt four points, two rebounds and one steal; and Isaiah Wiese two points, three rebounds and one steal.

This week the Cardinals hosted the Niobrara/Verdigre Cougars on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and will host the Spalding Academy Shamrocks on Friday, Dec. 11.
