The St. Mary's Cardinals opened their season with a 36-34 loss to the Boyd County Spartans. The game came down to the last minute as Boyd County tied the match with a touchdown and two-point conversion run by Jared Koenig at the end of the fourth putting the game into overtime. The Cards were able to score six after Zach Crumly plowed the way for Grady Semin into the end zone, but their inability to get into the end zone for the conversion proved fatal as the Spartans put the game away with an overtime touchdown and the two-point conversion of their own for the win.
The Cardinals struck first blood when Grady Semin hit Connor Semin for a touchdown pass with just over a minute left in the first quarter.
The Spartans shut the Cards out in the second quarter but managed to put 12 points on the board before the half to lead the Cards 12-6.
The Cards had a productive third quarter scoring twice and holding the Spartans to eight.
The Cards scored first in the fourth and with seconds left in the fourth, the Spartans tied the game sending it into overtime where Spartans conversion after their touchdown sealed the win.
The Cardinals ran 56 plays with 14 first downs and had six penalties for 55 yards. The Spartans ran 55 plays for 10 first downs and had eight penalties for 40 yards.
Cardinals quarterback Grady Semin had 16 passes with seven completion and one touchdown, Jared Koenig for the Spartans only passed the ball three times for one completion and eight yards.
Grant Winkelbauer led the Cardinals rushing with 29 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns and Zach Crumly had four carries for 19 yards.
Leading receivers for the Cards were Connor Semin with three catches for 43 yards and one touchdown, Crumly two catches for 24 yards, Jacob Wiese with one catch for 10 yards and Grant Winkelbauer one catch for six yards.
Leading the Spartans rushing was Jared Koenig with 24 carries for 109 yards and three touchdowns, Garrett Boetcher 21 carries for 65 yards and one touchdown and Jaeten Ellwanger with six carries for 47 yards and one touchdown.
Ethan Reed had the only catch for the Spartans for eight yards.
Leading the Cardinal defense was Cole Rosenkrans with 15 tackles, Grady Semin 12 tackles, Jack Krotter 11 tackles and two sacks, Grant Winkelbauer 11 tackles, Crumly 10 tackles, Jacob Pongratz and Aidan Hedstrom three tackles and Connor Semin and Isaiah Wiese one tackle each.
Leading the Spartan defense was Ethan Reed 16 tackles, Jared Koenig 13 tackles, Jory Zeisler, Garrett Boetcher and Lane Carson seven tackles each, Mason Disterhaup five tackles, Connor Hermsen and Grant Kirwan and Isaiah Purviance three tackles each and Cory Koenig and Kolt Boettcher one tackle each
