STUART - The St. Mary's Cardinals came to town Thursday night ready to play and handed the Stuart Broncos a tough 36 point loss winnings 42-6.
Both teams started slowly with both defenses holding their own with neither team scoring. The Cards came out determined in the second quarter with Grant Winkelbauer drawing first blood on a five-yard touchdown. The Cards traded sides of the field with the Broncos a couple of times before Quarterback Tate Thompson ran in a quick one-yard touchdown followed by a two-point conversion by Gabe Pribil. The last score of the second quarter came on a 18-yard touchdown pass from Thompson to Connor Semin, who regained play status this week after an injury in the first game of the season against Boyd County. The Cards led at the half 20-0.
The Cards scored once in the third when Thompson scored on a six-yard touchdown. The Broncos got on the board when they drove down to the red zone and scored on a one-yard touchdown. The Cards continued their domination of the grid-iron into the fourth with Winkelbauer scoring on a 10-yard touchdown with Thompson hitting Winkelbauer for the conversion and then Thompson got the last score of the game on a five-yard touchdown with Pribil running in the final two points.
St. Mary's ran 57 plays for 19 first downs and had six penalties for 43 yards. The Broncos ran 44 plays for 11 first downs and had seven penalties for 45 yards.
Thompson as quarterback for the Cards had nine throws for five completions for 78 yards and one touchdown. Winkelbauer had one throw for one completion for 12 yards.
Winkelbauer led the Cards in rushing with 31 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns; Thompson had 13 carries for 98 yards and three touchdowns and Pribil had three carries for 24 yards.
The Everitt brothers led the receiving for the Cardinals with Issac Everitt having one catch for 29 yards and Adam Everitt with two catches for 29 yards and Semin with one touchdown catch for 18-yards.
The Cards fumbled the ball twice and turned it over on both occasions.
Defensively Winkelbauer led the Cardinals with 13 tackles; Semin had 11 tackles; Adam Everitt had nine tackles; Pribil had six tackles; Isaiah Wiese had six tackles; Dalton Adler five tackles; Thompson four tackles; and Issac Everitt and Wyatt Scofield each had two tackles on the night.
Ryan Steinhauser threw the ball 15 times for six completions and was intercepted four times.
Grant Pease led the rushing for the Broncos with 18 carries for 71 yards; Steinhauser had five carries for 25 yards and one touchdown; Cameron Sattle had two carries for seven yards and Wade Paxton had one carry for five yards.
Leading receivers for Stuart were Paxton with three catches for 48 yards; Sattle two catches for 26 yards and Pease one catch for two yards.
Leading defensive players for Stuart were Steinhauser with 16 tackles, Paxton and Sattler nine tackles each; Tyler Steinhauser six tackles; Colton Kaup and Tory Thurlow five tackles each; Pease and Austin Nachtman and Logan Reynolds four tackles each; and Haden Kaup and Kyle Steinhauser one tackle each.
