Lady Eagles Face Number One Rated South Dakota Team ![]() Kelsey Appleby (10) drives in for two against Wagner. Photo courtesy Studio B Photography. Last week the Lady Eagles dropped a hard-fought battle against Wagner 50-36, who is currently 15-0 and rated number one in class A in South Dakota. " This game was played evenly in several categories with each team having the same amount of made FG's, and 12 turnovers, but the difference was at the free throw line with Wagner making 16 out of 18 and the Eagles only connecting on five out of 14. We actually shot 19 more shots from the field as did Wagner, but missed five or six point blank ones that were big. Wagner is a tremendous team with three girls 5-11" on the floor and very physical. I was proud of the way our girls battled throughout the game and continued to fight! Playing this type of competition will only help us down the road for the remainder of our season including conference and districts," said Coach Eichelberger. Leading the Lady Eagles in this game were Kelsey Appleby with 12 points and three rebounds, Alex Hedlund with eight points and four rebounds, Brandi Walters with six points and one rebound and Molly Shane with five points and seven rebounds. |
Eagle Wrestlers Face Tough Competition ![]() Marcus McNichols gets his hand raised after a victory over Ryley LaVene of Norris. (photo by Kathy Marvin) The Eagle Wrestlers had a very difficult weekend this Saturday in Aurora. O’Neill went 0-4 in dual action. Losing 29-39 to York, 24-54 to Central City, 30-46 to Aurora, and 33-45 to Norris. York upset Central City to earn the team title. Joe Gillham turned in the most notable performance for the Eagles going 4-0 on the day with three pins. “The 0-4 record really stings, no doubt about it. I think to a certain extent we got caught looking ahead at our upcoming duals instead of taking them one at a time. That starts at the top and I need to do a better job keeping our guys focused. That said, the reality is we faced four pretty deep Class B teams today. Our margin for error wasn’t very large in any of those duals and the mistakes we made were more then enough to sink us,” commented Coach Corkle. The Eagles will be in action on Thursday night at home when they take on Creighton in dual action starting at 6:30. On Saturday the Eagles will travel to Albion for the always tough Boone Central Invitational. “We’re hopeful this kind of outcome can serve to refocus us as a team. Hopefully, everyone that is a part of this group, from coaches to wrestlers is looking in the mirror and asking themselves, ‘what can I do to improve this team?’ Our motto for the season is, ‘If it’s to be, it’s up to me.’ I’d say those words resonate a little louder after this weekend.” Individual records from the weekend are as follows: 106 - Jon Marvin 3-1 113 - Joe Gillham 4-0 120 - Blake Walters 3-1 126 - Dion Nemec 1-3 132 - Cory Rowse 3-1 138 - Marcus McNichols 2-2 145 - Angel Rodriguez 1-3 152 - David Fox 3-1 160 - Jesse Albarran 0-4 170 - Tim Lechtenberg 0-4 182 - Open 195 - Morgan Sterns 1-3 220 - Thomas Schipporeit 1-3 HWT - Jordan Christensen 1- 3 Eagles 45 Norris 33 106: Clayton Cobb, NORR, dec. Eagles Dominate Wagner Red Raiders ![]() O'Neill's Brock Schueth (25) fakes out Wagner with a baseline pass during basketball action Tuesday night against the Red Raiders. O'Neill defeated Wagner 55-47. Photo courtesy Studio B Photography. Last Tuesday the O’Neill Eagles hosted the Wagner Red Raiders and sent them back to South Dakota with a loss by defeating them 55-47. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead to go up 11-5 after the first quarter and they never looked back. Each Wagner run was met head on as the Eagles kept the game out of reach, never letting the game get to within five points. “We did not play our best basketball tonight but we did just enough to get the “W” and I am proud of the way we are playing as a team. It's nights like these that separate a divided team from the ones that work well together and find ways to win even when some things are not going as planned,” commented Coach Kallhoff. It also helped that the Eagles were nearly perfect from the charity strip by going 16-18 for a season high 89%. Leading the Eagles on the night was Jordyn Johnson, who recorded his fifth straight double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Derrick Hostert also had a good night as he finished some great looks near the hoop to drop in 13 points. Brock Schueth also ended the night in double digits with 10 to go along with his team high three assists. Everyone is finding their roles at just the right time for the Eagles, so come watch as they travel to West Holt to take on the cross-county rival Huskies in Atkinson tonight, Thursday. |
