Lady Cards Take On Ewing And CWC

Laura Hynes of Ewing (22) dribbles to the bucket in last Thursday's game in Ewing.

Last Thursday the Lady Cardinals traveled to Ewing and played the always tough Ewing Lady Tigers. This contest went back and forth for most of the game until SMH was able to score 17 points compared to Ewing's five, in the final period. SMH was able to win 53-44 in a very tough game. Brooke Bauer led all scorers and rebounders as she posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Justine Blumenstock, Megan Schneider and Jessi Pongratz did a good job on the boards pulling down, eight, seven and six rebounds. Bridget Schneider led in assists with four while a host of Lady Cardinals had several steals.

Next action brought CWC Lady Renegades to town. The Cards were able to pull out a win and push their season record to 11-2. CWC had a definite height advantage inside against SMH. Justine Blumenstock did a great job of boxing out her much taller player and only allowing her three points in the game. Justine had a lot of help from the rest of her team as switching and doubling had to occur. SMH had seven players score points,  led by Brook Bauer and Justine with 12 and 11 in the 50-31 victory. Bridget Schneider dished out eight assists while our bench was able to spark the team with some nice shooting from the outside led by Emily Everitt's eight points.

Both games required a huge team effort and the Lady Cards responded to the challenge.

Ewing Boys Split With

Elkhorn Valley And St. Mary's

DAMIAN SUMMERS of Ewing (5) goes up for a shot against Cole Moon of St. Mary's in last Thursday's game in Ewing.

The Ewing Tigers boy’s basketball team split games last week against Elkhorn Valley and St. Mary’s. The Tigers avenged a tough loss to Elkhorn Valley in the holiday tournament by downing the Falcons 60-49 before facing the top-rated Cardinals on Thursday night and falling 78-48. The Tigers took only a one point lead into the fourth quarter against Elkhorn Valley on Tuesday, but exploded for 27 fourth quarter points to come away with the victory. On Thursday night, the Cardinals were too tough for the Tigers as St. Mary’s dominated inside with 6’7" twin towers Tom Chvala and Adam Moon and 6’5” Tait Sibbel. Against Elkhorn Valley, the Tigers were led by 20 points and eight rebounds from Robert Nordby. Tad Fry chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds while Jake Walton added 10. Damian Summers led in assists with six while scoring nine points. Blake Cunningham had six assists and five rebounds. In the match against Elkhorn Valley leading the Tigers were Blake Cunningham with 16 points, Damian Summers 15 points and five assists, Tad Fry with 12 points,  Jake Walton with eight points, Robert Nordby with eight rebounds and five assists. Blake Cunningham led the way with 15 points on five three pointers against St. Mary’s, and Damian Summers and Jake Walton each added nine points. Cunningham led the way on the boards with six and Michael Hynes added four. “Our team competed very well in the win against Elkhorn Valley on Tuesday, we need to take that and build upon it throughout the remainder of the season. St. Mary’s has an outstanding team and we had a period in the first half where we tried to play up-tempo with them and that was a mistake, we needed to be deliberate on offense and play tougher inside and on the boards defensively.” said Coach Appleby.

Eagles Record Back To Back Road Wins

Last Thursday the Eagles traveled to Ainsworth and brought home another victory by defeating the Bulldogs 63-43. The first half was remarkably close with both teams trading baskets, but the Eagle defense stepped up in the second half to hold the Bulldogs to single digits in each of the last two periods. It was a true team effort when it came to scoring as 10 players had at least two points, led by Jordyn Johnson who finished with 13 followed closely by Derrick Hostert with 12 and Tyler Knopp with 10 to go along with his team high four assists. Johnson not only led the Eagles in scoring but, he also ripped down a career high 17 rebounds to lead O’Neill to a dominating performance on the boards by out rebounding Ainsworth 39 to 25 with the help from Connor Peterson and Tyler Knopp who each hauled in eight boards apiece. Knopp also led the team defensively with four steals as Hostert swiped away three.

“This was a great team effort tonight. We had some guys who had to exert a lot of energy to hold Nick Martin to 14 points because he has the potential for 30 on any given night.” The rest of the guys stepped up and hit some solid shots that certainly helped us pull away,” commented Coach Kallhoff.

After beating Ainsworth, the Eagles were not done with the Bulldogs because, on Saturday they traveled east to take on the previously undefeated 11-0 Bulldogs of Creighton. O’Neill grabbed an early lead and held it throughout, fighting off a late surge by Ryan Mitteis who scored the game high 29  points, to beat the Bulldogs 77-66.

“We struggled a bit at the line late in the game to allow a window for Creighton to climb back into it to make it interesting, but we hung in there and never stopped being aggressive which is how we want to play for four quarters,” said Coach Kallhoff. Leading the Eagles on the night was Jordyn Johnson who put together his best game of the season finishing with 28 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Jordyn also won the sportsmanship award given out by Creighton for demonstrating a good attitude, even after fouling out with two minutes to play. Brock Schueth also had a decent night, finishing with 15 points and five assists, as Derrick Hostert chipped in 11 points while leading the defense with six steals. Connor Peterson also did well on the glass for O’Neill by hauling in 12 boards to go along with seven points. Tyler Knopp had nine, Donnie Taylor four, and David Akainda rounded out the scoring with three. The Eagles faced Wagner on Tuesday of this week and host Norfolk Catholic next Tuesday, the 24th.
