W. Leonard Dexter

William Leonard Dexter, age 84, of Amelia, passed away on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. at the Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Chambers with Pastor Dennis Davenport officiating.

Burial was in the Chambers Cemetery.

Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard was born on Feb. 7, 1928, in rural Holt County to William T. and Emma E. (Burrell) Dexter. After Leonard completed the ninth grade he started ranching with his family.

Leonard married Charlene Kay Graves on March 27, 1968. They continued to ranch in Holt County. They later adopted two children, Mark and Chrystal. Charlene died on Dec. 27, 1989.

He played baseball and enjoyed ranching, fishing and hunting with his grandchildren.

Leonard is survived by two children: Chrystal and husband, Tim Sweeden of Floral, AK,  and Mark and wife, April Dexter of Amelia; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers: Roland and wife, Delores Dexter of  Lead, SD,  and Don and wife, Marlene Dexter of Amelia; and two sisters: Beulah Moses of Amelia and Opal Kirkpatrick of Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Raymond Dexter; and one sister, Hazel Dexter.

Memorials are suggested to the Chambers Volunteer Fire Department.

Lala Wells


LaLa Wells, age 99, of O'Neill, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 13, 2012, at the Golden LivingCenter in O'Neill.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Biglin's Mortuary with Rev. Joel Wentworth officiating. Music was provided by organist, Deb Frederick and soloist, Timothy Hanzlik.

Pallbearers were James Hanzlik, Ron Wells, David Ertz, Curtis Kopejtka, David Wells, Max Olson, Darren Wells, and Robert Wayne Wells.

Honorary pallbearers were Lala, Briana, Stacy, Timothy, Rachelle, Donnie, Kim, Debra, Bobbi, Kevin, Christie, Kelly, Tim, Allen, Brent, Laura, Bill, Grady, Clifford, Stephanie, Rob, Monica, Monty, Michelle, Melinda, Melissa, Marc, Milton, Michael, Donna, Susan, Tami, and Jeff.

In memoriam were Diane Nelson and Joseph Hanzlik.

Burial was in the Scottville Cemetery northeast of O'Neill.

Biglin's Mortaury in O'Neill was in charge of arrangements.

Lala was born on July 8, 1912, at Redbird, to William and Alice (Ross) Buttolph. She married Clifford Wells on Aug. 29, 1931, at Malta, MT. Clifford passed away on Oct. 17, 1974.

LaLa is survived by nine children: Lyle Wells and wife, Shirley of Lynch, Etta Mae Olson and husband, Warren of Albion, Delores Nelson and husband, Clifford of Neligh, Wilmer Wells and wife, Jan of Blue Hill, Mary Ellen Sutton and husband, Ron of Genoa, Anna Ertz and husband, Butch of O'Neill, Donald Wells and wife, Carol of Columbus, Albert Wells and wife, Marla of  Columbus, and Rilla Hanzlik and husband, Francis of Clearwater; 43 grandchildren; 120 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Lee Wells of Rapid City, SD; and two sisters-in-law, Vera Wabs and Loula Wells, both of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Robert Wells; one granddaughter, Diane Nelson; one grandson, Joseph; seven brothers and four sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Scottville Cemetery.

Carolyn L. Kubik

Carolyn Louise Kubik, age 71, of Stuart, passed away, Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at the West Holt Memorial Hospital in Atkinson from a lengthy illness.

Carolyn chose to be cremated and the family met guests from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at the same location.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at the Seger Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Wayne Owens officiating. Music was provided by organist, Deb Kaup and soloist, Bonnie Krysl.

Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn was born in Lone Pine, CA, on June 2, 1940, to John and Blanche (Spear) DeNault, Sr.

She lived in Bishop, CA, and married Joseph (Joe) William Kubik on June 19, 1959, in Carson City, NV. To this union six children were born. The family moved to Stuart in 1976 and made Stuart their home.

Carolyn enjoyed fishing, playing and coaching softball. She did a lot of crocheting and knitting, making many afghans for family and friends. Many in the community would call her "Mom," as she was known by many to be very motherly, helping people in need and giving advice when needed. She enjoyed being a part of the stock car committee for many years and helping it become very successful. She was also a Legion Auxiliary member.

Carolyn is survived by her children and their spouses: Fred and Janet (Timmerman) Kubik, Mary (Kubik) Engelhaupt, Dale and Margaret (Timmerman) Kubik, Bill and Carrie (Kubik) Engelhaupt, and George Kubik; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two brothers and their spouses: John and Betty DeNault Jr. of Ventura, CA, and Bill and Michelle DeNault of Bishop, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Blanche DeNault and her son, Joseph John Kubik.

Roland L. Hornback


Roland L. Hornback

Roland  Leroy  Hornback, age 74, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday Feb. 14, 2012, at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, SD, with Pastor Clark Gies officiating. Music was provided by organist, Viola Wittmuss and soloist, Penny Davis.

Pallbearers were Kyle Krotter, Andrew Krotter, Michael Krotter, Nick Oleson, J.J. Pritchett, Cody Pritchett, and Mike Schram.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Roland's family and friends.

Graveside interment was at 2 p.m. in the Union Cemetery in Spencer.

Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer was in charge of arrangements.

Roland Leroy Hornback, son of Walter and Martha (Pritchett) Hornback, was born June 28, 1937, south of Spencer, and attended country school near his home.

On Oct. 6, 1956, Roland was married to Rose M. Engelhaupt at Butte Community Church in Butte. The couple was blessed with five children: Roberta, Romona, Ronda, Roland Mark and Roger.

Roland worked for over 50 years at the William Krotter Company in Spencer. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, SD.

He enjoyed fishing, farming and being with his family and friends.

Roland is survived by his children: Roberta Oleson of Omaha, Romona (Dennis) Hespe of Spencer, Ronda (Jerald) Pritchett of O'Neill, Roland Mark (Mari) Hornback of Omaha,  and Roger (Deb) Hornback of Brunswick; brothers-in-law: Gene Matthews of Spencer and Tom Schram of Louisville; sister-in-law, Vickie Engelhaupt of O'Neill; and aunts: Velma Wickersham of Verdigre and Lila Pritchett of Lynch.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Hornback; parents, Walter and Martha Hornback; sister, Rosella Hornback Matthews; and a host of cousins.

Though no one is able to change the world, you have made a significant difference in our lives. We will miss you Dad.

E.C. "Bud" Kunz

Edward Carl "Bud" Kunz, age 90,  of  Stuart, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at Parkside Manor in Stuart.

Visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. wake service followed by a KC rosary on Wednesday evening, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Seger Funeral Home in Stuart.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stuart with Father Luke Steffes officiating. Music was provided by organist, Deb Kaup and singers, Brett, Jordan, Taylor and Caitlin Kunz.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Chad and Ryan Pokorny, Kory, Matt, and John Kramer, and Brett and Jordan Kunz.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Bud's remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Burial was at the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Stuart with military graveside rites conducted by the Stuart American Legion Post.

Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson was in charge of arrangements.

Bud was born on April 28, 1921, in Stuart, to Donat and Emma (Pettinger) Kunz, the youngest of 10 children. He attended Stuart Public High School and graduated in 1939.

He then served in World War II as a gunner in the Army Air Corps for four years. He enlisted on May 27, 1943 and was discharged  on Nov. 15, 1945.

After returning from the service, he married Mary (Kohle) Kunz on Oct. 29, 1947, in Stuart. Bud and Mary remained in Stuart to raise their children.  He established a main street business in retail, hardware, furniture, and carpet for 65 years in Stuart. 

With his many years of living in Stuart,  he was an amazing example of stewardship to his family, community, church, and country. 

Bud  was involved and was a leader in many organizations including the  American Legion, Stuart Park Board, Stuart races, Knights of Columbus, Stuart Public School Board, town board, rest home board, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. 

He enjoyed and supported thoroughly all the sporting events in local towns, Nebraska Cornhuskers and Stuart Broncos. Bud was always so personable, generous and helpful to all he met.

Bud is survived  by his wife, Mary of Stuart; five children: Dan and Jan (Kunz) Kramer of Atkinson, Randy and Sue (Kunz) Pokorny of Winner, SD, Kathy (Kunz) Friedrich of Norfolk, John and Sandra (Kunz) Kramer, and Bob and Kathy Kunz, all of Stuart; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bert Kunz of Lincoln, and a sister, Florence Flannigan of North Platte.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.

E.C. "Bud" Kunz will always be remembered as a great husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and a friend who participated in life fully. The family will forever be grateful for all the memories he has brought to their lives.

Cliff Clemens

Cliff Clemens, age 81, of O誰eill, passed away  Saturday morning, Feb. 11, 2012, at the Golden  LivingCenter in O誰eill.

Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday,  Feb. 14,  2012,  at Biglin痴 Mortuary.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at Biglin痴 Mortuary in O誰eill with Steve Randolph of Faith Community Church in O誰eill officiating. Music was provided by organist, Jean Hoffman and soloist, Willie Rowse.

Pallbearers were Butch Nielson, Arlin Rowse, Mike Verhey, Chad Mazanec, Brian Rowse, and Bill Pribil.

Military graveside rites were held at 2 p.m. at the Chambers Cemetery conducted by the Chambers American Legion Post 320.

Biglin痴 Mortuary in O誰eill was in charge of arrangements.

Cliff was born Oct. 10, 1930, at Amelia to Levi and Vida (Soderstein) Clemens. He grew up in the Amelia area and received his high school diploma from Chambers.

He served in the Marines during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Cliff was involved in the atomic testing in Nevada.

He married Ruth Ann Porter, June 2, 1955, in Pickstown, SD.

He farmed in the Amelia area, worked for Werner Construction burying underground telephone cables and operated the Village Cafe in Chambers.

Cliff liked to refinish furniture and enjoyed animals. He was a life member of the VFW and Chambers American Legion.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Clemens of O'Neill;  four sons: James Young of O誰eill, Dick Clemens and wife, Debbie of Hesperia, CA, Todd Clemens of O誰eill, and Michael Clemens and wife, Amy of Verdigre; two daughters, Sherry Mazanec of Ashton and Tammy Verhey and husband, Mike of Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Ruth Pribil and Joan Martin, both of O誰eill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the Holt County Humane Society in O誰eill.
