John Harlan Turpin Jr., 66, of O'Neill, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation was held Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill. 

Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021 at the mortuary in O'Neill. Rev. Mike Durre officiated. Military rites were provided by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93.

Burial will take place at a later date in Hospers Cemetery in Hospers, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

John was born on Aug. 2, 1955 in Valentine, to John and Josephine (Koening) Turpin. 

After graduating from Valentine High School, he worked at a gas station and enjoyed odd and end jobs along with being a butcher.

John married Dana Lee Greenwood on June 8, 1980 in O’Neill. To this union two children were born Audra and John III. They later divorced.  

John joined the U.S. Army on March 30, 1980 and was honorably discharged on March 3, 1987.  

He also was a member of the Nebraska National Guard.  

John worked as a butcher for Super Foods in O’Neill.   

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends and family.  

John is survived by his daughter Audra Abdi of St. Cloud, MN; four grandchildren Jabreel Abdi, Kamaal Abdi, Bailey (Turpin) Harvey and Aniyah Griffin; his mother Josephine Turpin of Atkinson; two brothers Joel Turpin of Norfolk and Jeff (Nancy) Turpin of O'Neill; one sister-in-law Bonnie Turpin of O'Neill; and many nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his father John Turpin Sr., his son John Turpin III in 2002, one brother Jerry Turpin in 2013 and one sister Lela Turpin in 2018.
