Area Hit By Storms
Two large storms swept through the area on Tuesday, Aug. 6 and Friday, Aug. 9.
The first storm brought damaging winds, heavy rain and hail. Winds were recorded at 49 mph around midnight Aug. 6 at the O'Neill Airport. The City of Atkinson lost power for a few hours.
The second storm cell resulted in tornado warnings in South Dakota and thunderstorm warnings in Nebraska. Hail fell north of Atkinson and wind gusts hit 41 mph.

This picture was taken on Highway 20 east of Atkinson on Wednesday, Aug. 7 as Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) crews worked on downed power lines. The storms brought damaging winds, heavy rain and hail. Winds were recorded at 49 mph around midnight Aug. 6 at the O’Neill airport.
Trees fell onto the power lines west of Emmet during the storm on Aug. 6. NPPD crews had the power lines repaired the next day.
