STUART — Thirty-nine fifth through eighth graders from Ewing, O'Neill, Atkinson, Chambers and Stuart competed in the 2018 Holt County Spelling Bee at the Stuart Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 9.

Stuart eighth grader Emma Alder was this year’s winner. Winning second place was Chambers eighth grader Janice Whitaker. Hunter Tubbs placed third, a fifth grader at Stuart Public School.

Alder spelled the word "ventilator" in the seventh oral round after Whitaker stumbled while spelling “pragmatic” in the sixth round.

Alder is eligible to compete in the State Spelling Bee.

The students began with a written practice round. This was followed by three written rounds before 11 students were left to compete in an oral round.

After seven rounds of oral spelling Alder was declared the winner.

Deb Kaup pronounced the words and Jan Kunz was the chairman.
